Meet our new Senior Research Associate: Dr. Amanda Bolton

It’s been an exciting year of growth for Research in Action — and we’re delighted to introduce the third new leader to join us in 2024: Dr. Amanda Bolton! Dr. Bolton will serve as our new Senior Research Associate and Research Operations Manager. Learn more about her in the short interview below and please join us in welcoming her to the team!

What is your passion for equity and justice in the community?

Coming from a disadvantaged community in St. Paul, I am passionate about doing meaningful work that uplifts and gives back to similar communities. Through my experiences, I've seen firsthand how targeted support and resources can transform lives and strengthen entire neighborhoods.

What would you like to share about your educational and professional background

With more than 20 years in nonprofit and government research, I hold a Ph.D. and M.A. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Missouri, St. Louis, and a B.A. in Sociology and Psychology from the University of Minnesota. My key achievements include leading correctional reentry programs in Kansas and Michigan, developing a Los Angeles community college Faculty Innovation Hub, evaluating substance abuse programs, and conducting California school district equity audits.

What skills do you bring to your work at RIA?

My goal is to amplify marginalized voices using a data-driven approach to identify systemic barriers and develop evidence-based solutions for lasting change. I bring both strong research and methodology skills, along with the ability to connect authentically and empathetically with diverse community members. These combined abilities allow me to not only gather and analyze data effectively but also to translate findings into meaningful actions that resonate with and benefit the communities we serve.

What are you most excited in your job at RIA?

I am excited to be joining a Black woman-owned organization that demonstrably upholds the principles of equity and equality in its own practices, both internally and externally.
